In Cooler Times

This painting is from photos taken on the greenway during a late misty morning walk in the fall.  As we hit 115 today in our "feels like" temperatures, it is nice to revisit a cooler moment.

Something Different

I don't think I have ever painted or made a print of any kind of bird before but there's always a time to try something new.  This print was from a group project where we each brought a poem to our meeting then everyone drew one out of the hat and had to create something from that poem.  I drew the Red Wheelbarrow:

The Birds!

 The bird of paradise in my garden this year was amazingly prolific and I took a lot of photos of the blooms at different stages.  The plants had gotten quite a lot of freeze damage and I cut them back severely but they seem to have thrived in spite of the pruning.  There may be more in this series as I never tire of painting the birds in all their exuberance.

Ochre Pit Cove

 Thinking of past hikes in Newfoundland as we swelter here in the US.  This was from Ochre Pit Cove on Conception Bay North.  It was a crystal clear, sunny day that left the cliffs and rock formation  a brilliant white in the light.

Storm Over the Marsh

In the arts group I belong to we have done an excercise where you draw art cards from a deck and they have instructions on things you need to incorporate in a piece.  One of the cards someone drew was to make a painting using only 100 brushstrokes.  That seemed like a good excersise to me so I gave it a try and failed miserably (I will continue trying though).  This painting is what came of that effort and is definitely more than 100 brushstrokes.  It is from a very blurry photo I took one day as a storm was coming over the marsh and we were driving past.

Birds in the Garden

The White Bird of Paradise in the garden sent out masses of blooms this year after losing a lot of leaf to the frost.

To the Gorge Again

This is an upper view looking out on the Rio Grande Gorge as you make the drive to Taos.  It always takes my beath away.

Summer Storm at the Beach

 Exploring the light and dark of a summer storm at the beach in a linocut print.  I can see there is still work to do on capturing that intense cloud formation we see here in the afternoons.

Memorable hikes from the Bonavista Peninsula

Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula is a great place to hike about on the waters edge.  Tickle Cove is a spot that has amazing red rock formations and as always on the Bonavista, the water crashes and dances on the rock.

Taking the Low Road

 While the high road to Taos is magnificent it its views, the low road offers amazing glimpses of the Rio Grande that I find equally impressive.  This watercolor is an exercise in the use of only 3 colors: very light dilute Cerulean blue, full color Quinacridone Gold, and Windsor Violet muted with Paynes Gray.

Dames Point Redux

Sometimes I just really don't like a painting until it has been re-visited.  This Dames Point painting is a re-work of an earlier piece.

Sandhill Crane Experiments in Moku Hanga

I am still playing with the moku hanga technique and experimenting with different papers and printing on dry paper instead of damp.  The first photo is the initial drawing and one side of the carved block.  I used both sides and each was a reduction process.  The first print is on an Awagami Hosho Select paper and the second is on Rives printmaking paper.  I was hoping to get an edition of 12 out of one of the colorways and the Rives printing came out well with 14 consistent prints.  Twelve of those are being shipped off to the Emerald Print Exchange.  I am encouraged to keep going with the experiment as I still have a few more blocks I can work.

Monument Valley

I loved this place when we were there.  It rained and was foggy with low clouds in the morning but cleared up in the afternoon long enough for a few photos.
