In the historic district here on the island is a facade from an old bus station. It had two entrances and two waiting areas for segregation under Jim Crow. The facade has been saved and is now an entrance to the courtyard and parking area for new condos on the site.

When thinking of the everglades here in Florida most people think of the endless sea of grass and swamp that is most often depicted. I think of the labyrinth of mangrove creeks running off the bay behind the keys. The water is an everchanging reflection of the sun's path through the mangrove forest and the roots below the surface serve as a nursery for an amazing assortment of aquatic life. This print is from one of many photos taken years ago on a slow ride through the mangrove creeks behind Key Largo.

Another go at capturing the Mendenhall Glacier in a print. This is on Rives paper and I left a couple of color runs grainy because it sort of captured the feel of the glacier in the rainy and snowy April weather. This 19 color reduction linocut is handprinted in a small edition of eight.

When I think too much about what will be the next print or painting, sometimes that just blocks me and nothing gets done. When that happens, I like to just paint something I have had on the back burner, on a small canvas, or draw in colored pencil to kind of work back into other work. This week's unblocking paintings are from photo references I have taken and printed out in the past. They have been just hanging around for this very task.

This past April I was fortunate to join three of my artist friends on a cruise through the inner passage of Alaska. It was a completely new landscape to me with the grey dawns of April slowly lighting the sky over the peaks as we sailed by. I have just started working on some prints and paintings that are more based on the feel of that landscape than the actual photos that I took there. Here are the first 3 from this effort.
