Evolving Imagery

Below is an example of how some images evolve in different media over a period of time.  I found a photo of cottonwoods on the Rio Grande in my pictures from past trips and initially produced the watercolor sketch.  After a while I used the sketch as the basis for the oil painting, then did a quick pastel sketch as a preliminary for a print.  The print is actually backward of the original image which I did on purpose to see how it would look in that direction and the colors are significantly altered from the prior images.  As I can no longer find the original photo image this is probably it for this iteration.

Bird Study Just for Fun

I was looking at a few small sketches and studies that I had done from looking at Bird of Paradise plants in my garden over the past few years.  This painting takes some of those images from the watercolors and explores them in oil.  The actual plants got zapped by the freezes this past winter and had to be cut to the ground, so it may be a few more years before they produce the masses of flowers again.  The leaves are well on their way back and give amazing color and texture variations every year as they go through the seasons which is the basis of most of this piece.

Garden Queen

This linocut reduction print recalls one of my favorite canna lilies that grew in the garden at our last house.  Below are photos of the color printing progression along with the final print.

Dames Point

This is kind of a fanciful mash up of images and memories of this bridge into Jacksonville that we drive over at least a couple of times a month.  It never fails to be interesting.
